Off-Campus Access to Databases

Pfeiffer Library's databases, including NCLIVE, are available to current students, faculty and staff only. If you fall into one of those categories, you can access the databases from off-campus. (Note: This applies to databases on the Research Databases page. Our online catalog of books is available to anyone, anytime!)

When you click on a database name from our Research Databases page, you will be asked to enter a username and password.

For students:

Your username is your 5-digit student id number.

Your password is the last 6 digits of your social security number.

NEW STUDENTS IN SPRING 07: We apologize that due to personnel changes, the University IT department has not yet entered your information in our password database so we must add you individually. Please fill out the database registration form (link below) and we will add you ASAP.

For Faculty:

Your username is your first initial and last name, and your password is the last 4 digits of your social security number. If you are new or have never used the databases off-campus before, you will need to contact us to put your information into the system.

When you enter those correctly, you will be taken straight to the database. If your username and password do not work, the problem may be one of the following:

  • If you are running any kind of filtering software to restrict children's access to the Internet, the software may also prevent you from accessing our databases. Try disabling the filtering software.
  • If you have changed the security settings in your browser or in America Online, the tighter security may prevent you from accessing the databases. Try resetting to the default security.
  • If you are accessing the databases from work and your employer has set up an Internet firewall, you may not be able to access our databases.
All of the above can prevent access to proxy servers, which is the method used to provide off-campus access to our databases.

If none of the above apply and you still cannot access the databases, it is likely that for some reason your password is not in our system. Please fill out a database registration form and we will put you in the system as soon as possible (usually within 24 hours). Please try your username and password before filling out the form!

If you still have problems accessing the databases from off-campus, please contact the systems administrator. Please tell us which database you were trying to access, exactly what happened, and any error message you receive. We need this information to be able to troubleshoot your problem!
