Beth Webb Hart

Our 2007 Book and Author Luncheon  featured Beth Webb Hart, author of Grace at Low Tide and Adelaide Piper. Hart is a celebrated Christian author and Carolina native known for her likeable low-country characters and timely tales. Her talk was well-received, as were her readings from her books, and the luncheon was enjoyed by all.

Ann B. Ross


The 2006 luncheon featured Ann B. Ross, author of the Miss Julia series of novels. The crowd loved her readings, asked many questions about Miss Julia and the books, and of course enjoyed a nice lunch and book signing.

David Payne

The 2005 Book and Author Luncheon featured David Payne. Born in Henderson, NC, Payne now teaches in the MFA program at Queens University. His novels include Confessions of a Taoist on Wall Street, winner of the Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship Award; Early From the Dance; Ruin Creek; and Gravesend Light. Most of his novels are set in the Outer Banks of NC. He entertained the crowd with the story of how he became a writer, and teased everyone with a reading from his forthcoming novel.

Those who could make it out in the snow enjoyed our 2004 Book and Author Luncheon guest Josephine Humphreys. She is the author of Nowhere Else on Earth, Dreams of Sleep (winner of the 1985 Ernest Hemingway award for first fiction), Rich in Love (made into a motion picture), and Fireman's Fair. She is the recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award. As most of Humphreys' books are set in her birthplace of Charleston, SC, the luncheon featured low-country artwork and food.

The 2003 Book and Author Luncheon featured author Joseph Bathanti, who delighted the audience with his presentation which included readings from his poetry and his novel East Liberty. Attendees also enjoyed a fine lunch of crab cakes, salad, and white chocolate mousse, and a display of artwork by Pfeiffer alumna Barbara Dziezye Morris.

In 2002, Fred Chappell, North Carolina poet laureate and accomplished author, entertained the audience with a dramatic reading from one of his highly acclaimed novels, and also signed books for attendees.

NC native Robert Morgan was the featured author for the Friends of the Library's annual Book & Author Luncheon on February 13, 2001. Already widely respected in literary circles for both his novels and his poetry, Morgan's popularity exploded earlier this year when his novel Gap Creek was chosen as one of Oprah Winfrey's book selections. Morgan entertained the audience by reading from some of his books, and afterwards patiently signed books for every attendee.

For the 2000 event, Pfeiffer University Friends of the Library offered the public a chance to meet and listen to Frye Gaillard, a former Southern Editor at the Charlotte Observer and author of 16 books. During the event, Goode Hall housed a pottery and photography exhibit entitled Catawba Indian Renaissance

Author Judy Goldman spoke at the 1999 Book & Author Luncheon. She discussed her critically acclaimed novel "The Slow Way Back," and her poetry.

Lee Smith delighted the luncheon attendees with her humorous stories at the 1998 Spring Book and Author Luncheon.

Ruth Moose, former Reference Librarian at Pfeiffer University, was the guest speaker at a Friends' 1998 Spring event. Ruth currently teaches creative writing at UNC.

The 1997 Spring Friends' Book and Author Luncheon featured Jan Karon. Her novels, which are centered in the imaginary town of Mitford, were a big hit with the luncheon's guests.
