Guide to using Education Full Text

To access Education Full Text
  1. Choose Education Full Text from the drop down menu on the Research Databases page. (Click on “Find an Article” on the main page to get to Research Databases!) You can also access EFT from the alphabetical or subject-based lists of individual databases on our website.

  2. Check the checkbox at the top labeled “Education Full Text”.

Advanced Search (Main search page)
Type your search phrase into the first box. Then choose one or more ways to narrow down your search:
  1. Boolean searching: This is the AND, OR and NOT you see on the left. You can type search terms in each of the three boxes and connect them by choosing AND, OR or NOT from those boxes. For example,

    EFTGuide00.jpg

will find articles that are about drugs in schools but not about alcohol.

  2. Searching specific fields: This is the box to the right. The default search is in all fields, as in the example above. These boxes can be set to search in the title, author, or other more specific fields. To find articles in a particular journal, type the journal name in one of the search boxes and set the field beside it to “Source”. (Be sure to also type your search term in a box and set the Boolean term to AND!)

  3. Dates: The default is “any year”. You can check the button beside “Within last 12 months” to find articles published in the last 12 months, or check the “From year” button and type in the years yourself to limit the search by year.

  4. “Limit To”: There are three independent choices here. Checking “Full Text” will only return full text articles (no abstract-only articles). “Page Image” will only bring back articles that have both full text and accompanying layout, diagrams, etc. This will bring back fewer articles than “Full text”. Checking “Peer Reviewed” will limit your search to peer-reviewed (also known as scholarly or professional) journals.

  5. Document Type: This allows you to limit your search to such items as book reviews, obituaries, etc.

  6. Physical Description: Allows you to limit your search to articles with graphs, maps, etc.

Click the blue Start button on the right to begin your search!

Search Results
A successful search will take you to the search results page. This page lists 10 articles at a time, with “Next” and “Previous” links at the bottom to move to the next page of results. The entry for each article includes:
  1. The title of the article in blue, the journal name in italics, and the author, date, page numbers, etc.

  2. Symbols representing full-text or PDF format if they are available. (The difference? Full-text means text only, where PDF includes pictures, diagrams, and the original layout of the article.) A key to these symbols is at the top of the page.

  3. If applicable, a symbol representing peer-reviewed (scholarly) journals.

  4. If applicable, a symbol indicating that Pfeiffer has the journal in print (“Library Owns”).

  5. A checkbox to the left of each article for marking articles that you want to go back to.

To view an article, click on the full text or PDF symbol to the left of the article. Clicking on an article title will give you an abstract (summary) of the article, as well as publication details.

Marking articles: To mark an article, click the checkbox to the left of it in the article list. If you mark several articles at once, you can then go back and review your selected articles. Just click on “Get Marked” in the blue bar at the bottom of the page. To print them, see below.

Printing
Click the “eMailPrintSave” button on the left.
  1. Under “Destination”, check “Print”
  2. Under “Include...” check Full Text if you want to print the entire article.
  3. Under “Which records...” the default choice is “Record displayed on the previous page” which means the article you were just looking at. You can also print your list of marked records; just check “Marked Records”.
  4. Click the blue Start button.

You can also email or save articles from “eMailPrintSave”; just choose the appropriate action under “Destination”, enter an email address in the box for emailing, and follow the printing instructions above.

To begin a new search, click “Advanced Search” on the left of the page. You can see what you've already searched for by clicking “Search History” on the left.
